Man City winger Riyad Mahrez branded 'world class' after sending Algeria into Afcon final

Riyad Mahrez was described as 'world class' after sending Algeria into the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.

With the scores level between Algeria and Nigeria at one goal apiece in Cairo, the Manchester City winger stepped up to fire a stoppage-time free-kick into the back of the net from 20 yards out.

Mahrez and Co. will now face Senegal in Friday's final.

Former Nigeria striker Peter Odemwingie took to Twitter after the game, expressing his disappointment at the result but praising Mahrez.

“Disappointing for Nigeria to lose with the last kick of the game just when we got back into it and few Algerian players looked tired,” Odemwingie tweeted.

“But fair play, they played well and had better chances. Congratulations Algeria. Mahrez is world class.”

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr was gracious in defeat as he admitted Algeria were worthy winners.

“It was a big fight until the last minute. Algeria did better in the first half than us but we came back in second half and we conceded this goal in the last minute,” said Rohr.

“I think the players wanted to go to extra time and believed Algeria would be tired and they could win in it extra time.

“I have to congratulate the players for a big fight against this very good team. They won it in the last minute and they deserved it."

Algeria won the Afcon in 1990 but had gone 29 years without reaching the final prior to Mahrez's stunner.
