Man City winger Raheem Sterling identifies turning point in England career

Raheem Sterling says his two-goal display for England against Spain in October was the turning point in his international career.

The Manchester City winger has scored four goals in the three England games since the victory in Seville, with Sterling's tally rising to eight in 49 appearanaces.

The 24-year-old is set to make his 50th cap for the Three Lions in the Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands on Thursday night, and Sterling said it will be a proud moment.

"I feel that growing up watching England, I always had a dream to pay for England but I never thought I'd be able to say that I'd have the chance to make my 50th cap," he said. "It's a massive achievement for me and one I'll treasure for rest of life, as will my family."

Sterling's previous England strike before the goals against Spain came in September 2015, and Sterling says a change of focus has proven beneficial.

"It was a massive moment for me," he said of the game against Spain.

"At 17 or 18 I wasn't looking at my goals ratio, it was more about enjoying it.

"It was only in the last year or so that I realised how bad my England goals ratio was. I put pressure on myself to end the drought but that wasn't the right thing to do.

"I've concentrated with the management team to correct it and I've been happy with how it's gone."
