Man City winger Raheem Sterling asked about captaining England

Raheem Sterling says he would be proud to captain England, should the opportunity arise.

The Manchester City winger is set to win his 50th cap for the Three Lions on Thursday night, when England play the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League semi-final.

Harry Kane, the permanent captain, is not guaranteed to start after joining up late with Gareth Southgate's squad after playing in the Champions League final on Saturday night.

Sterling could take the armband in his place, but insists his focus is on maintaining his impressive international form.

"That's something that is down to the manager not for me to decide," he said of captaining the side. "It's something I'd do proudly for sure, but something I'd leave to the manager."

Sterling scored twice against Spain in October to end a three-year barren run for England, and has since scored a further four goals.

It represents the 24-year-old's brightest spell for his country, and Sterling says a change in focus led to his improvement in front of goal.

"It was a massive moment for me," he said of his goals against Spain.

"At 17 or 18 I wasn't looking at my goals ratio, it was more about enjoying it.

"It was only in the last year or so that I realised how bad my England goals ratio was. I put pressure on myself to end the drought but that wasn't the right thing to do.

"I've concentrated with the management team to correct it and I've been happy with how it's gone."
