Man City win Premier League: Vincent Kompany praises Liverpool for 'exceptional' year and insists they 'did not deserve to lose it'

Vincent Kompany has heaped praise on Liverpool for their outstanding season to push Manchester City to the final day in the Premier League title race.

The Belgian captained Pep Guardiola’s side to back-to-back titles with a 4-1 win at Brighton on the final day sealing it by a point.

Kompany’s long-range strike last Monday ensured City edged past Leicester in one of the pivotal moments of the title race to ensure the champions ended the season with 14 successive victories.

And the centre-back has given credit to Jurgen Klopp’s side for challenging them all the way.

“Back to back... I think it was the hardest and most satisfying Premier League ever,” Kompany said.

“Liverpool were exceptional this year – I don’t mean to rub it in they did not deserve to lose it today.

“We’ve played against such a good team. We won at home at the Etihad and until now we’ve managed to stay ahead.”

Kompany also found time to praise his own team-mates for their performance, despite a slow pitch at the Amex making it trickier than usual to play their expansive style of football.

“Even though the pitch was slow I thought we were magnificent,” Kompany emphasised. ”It’s a combination – the players, the staff, we have such a desire to overachieve and because we have such a good team overachieving is difficult.

“We’re looking forward to the FA Cup now. We’re thinking about the next game on Saturday. We all chipped in this season. You talk about the goal – I’m thinking about how many clean sheets we achieved.

“We conceded a set piece today because we are probably the smallest team in the league but I’m so proud. We had to do the work defensively.”
