Man City will have to plan without Sergio Aguero for Champions League knockout tournament

Manchester City will have to plan without Sergio Aguero as they look to make Champions League history with Pep Guardiola.

Aguero has been out of action since June when he required knee surgery in Barcelona. The forward was included as part of the squad for the mini-tournament is expected to join up with the squad in Lisbon, where he will be welcomed; Aguero is a popular and experienced member of the dressing room whose presence will help his teammates.

City's top striker has not lost hope of being fit before the Champions League is out as he works hard on his rehabilitation. However, Guardiola will have to plan without him with Gabriel Jesus offering a different skill-set to the Argentine.

Jesus has settled into his role as the main striker. He has started all but one match since Aguero got injured - at Chelsea away, he was only deemed fit enough to come off the bench - and after failing to score in his first six appearances since the lockdown he has scored five goals in his last seven starts.

City played to Jesus's strengths against Real Madrid, as they had done in the first leg at the Bernabeu, with Phil Foden being used as a false nine and the whole team being willing to cede possession in order to press high up the pitch.

Lyon are expected to offer a more defensive approach than Real, but with Aguero still a doubt for the game Guardiola will have to continue working with the in-form Jesus in mind as the team trains for the quarter-final.
