Man City vs Schalke LIVE
Uefa Champions League 2018-19
Last-16, second leg |
(3-2 aggregate)
Venue: Etihad Stadium
Date: Tuesday, 12 March, 2019
Kick-off: 8pm GMT, tonight

Manchester City are in pole position to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals when they welcome Schalke for the second leg of their last-16 tie.

Schalke threatened a shock in Gelsenkirchen as they led 2-1 with five minutes of the first leg to play, but a sensational free-kick from their former star Leroy Sane - followed by a Raheem Sterling strike - handed Man City a 3-2 victory.

Three away goals mean Schalke will have to either win by two clear goals in Manchester or score at least three times, and Pep Guardiola will be confident of joining Tottenham and Manchester United in the last eight of the competition.

Man City vs Schalke team news and line-ups

Man City XI: Ederson, Walker, Danilo, Laporte, Zinchenko, Gundogan, Silva, Sterling, Sane, Bernardo, Aguero

Subs: Muric, Stones, Delph, Mahrez, Jesus, Foden, Humphreys

Schalke XI: Fahrmann; Bruma, Stambouli, Sane, Oczipka; Serdar; McKennie, Konoplyanka, Bentaleb, Burgstaller; Embolo

Score prediction: Man City 2-1 Schalke

Schalke showed in the first leg that they have enough talent to trouble Man City, but Guardiola's side should prove too canny in this leg. Expect the visitors to score, but they will likely tire and City can take advantage.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

This will be the fifth time the two sides have met. Previous to City's 3-2 win this year, they last met in the group stages of the Uefa Cup back in November 2008, when goals from Stephen Ireland and Benjani sealed a 2-0 victory for City in Gelsenkirchen and a place in the last 32.

Schalke and City also crossed paths in the Uefa Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals in 1970. On that occasion, the German outfit won the first leg 1-0 before being thrashed 5-1 by eventual competition winners City at Maine Road.
