Man City vs Liverpool fixture 'tricky' as Manchester police chief expresses concerns over Project Restart

Police in Manchester have cast doubt over the return of the Premier League - specifically raising concerns about Liverpool’s trip to the Etihad.

Jurgen Klopp’s champions-elect are due to face Manchester City shortly after the proposed restart - but police fear it will prompt Liverpool fans to head to the stadium, despite plans for games to be played behind closed doors.

The Premier League are determined to complete the season and are eyeing a June restart.

But Greater Manchester Police chief Ian Hopkins told the Mail: “What we are fearful of is that people will turn up either at neutral grounds or at home grounds and that could be particularly problematic.

“There are some quite tricky fixtures potentially. Liverpool coming to Man City I have no doubt would attract crowds whether they are allowed in the ground or not. It needs very, very careful thinking through.”

The Premier League’s Project Restart comes amid concerns from players about the health risks involved in playing during the coronavirus pandemic.

They still need to be convinced about the safety of getting back on the pitch.

And Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham insists the opinions of footballers must be taken into consideration.

He said: “People will have been struck by Raheem Sterling in the last 24 hours, saying he doesn't feel particularly safe, having lost people who are particularly close to him. Pep (Guardiola) lost his mum.

“You have to take on board the concerns of the players.

"Their views should be taken as priority when it comes to any restart.”
