Man City vs Liverpool fixture likely to be midweek and could see Reds clinch title

Liverpool's Premier League fixture at Manchester City is scheduled to be moved to a midweek, but it could still see the Reds secure the title.

With the English top-flight season set to resume on June 17 amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the Reds are 25 points clear of second-placed City at the top of the table, and a maximum of six points away from becoming champions for the first time in 30 years.

Jurgen Klopp's side will face neighbours Everton in their first match back on the weekend of June 20, with Merseyside Police set to confirm that they are happy for that match to go ahead at Goodison Park despite safety concerns.

In addition, the force are also set to agree that Liverpool's remaining home matches can go ahead at Anfield despite initial misgivings from police forces on a national level, who had suggested that some games could be switched to neutral venues.

If Pep Guardiola's City lose to Arsenal in their first game back on June 17, then Liverpool would win the league at Goodison Park with a Merseyside derby victory on June 20 or 21.

But even if the trophy isn't secured there, the Reds will be confident of wrapping it up sooner rather than later.

With the fixtures set to follow the order in which they were initially supposed to be played, Klopp's side are then due to face Crystal Palace at home, with that match looking likely to fall in a midweek slot in the week beginning June 22.

The original fixture list then had the Reds down to face Manchester City away next up, but they will be in FA Cup quarter-final action at Newcastle on the weekend of June 27.

The league fixtures for that weekend will then almost certainly be shifted to the midweek following, with City vs Liverpool the standout match.

If the Reds haven't secured the league-clinching result they need by then, they could do so by either beating or drawing with their closest challengers.

However, with City vs Liverpool said to be one of the matches that authorities are most concerned about, it could yet be that police insist that the game is played on a weekend.
