Man City vs Real Madrid Champions League clash in doubt following new quarantine rules

Manchester City's Champions League last-16 second leg tie against Real Madrid could be in jeopardy following new quarantine rules brought in by the British government.

Pep Guardiola's side are due to host the La Liga champions on 7 August, and are 2-1 up from the first leg at the Bernabeu which took place in February.

The winners of the tie are then set to take part in a mini-tournament to conclude the competition in Lisbon from August 12, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final taking place over the course of 12 days.

However, as of Sunday travellers arriving from Spain are required by law to quarantine for a period of 14 days after the country saw a second spike of coronavirus cases, with over 900 new infections reported on both Thursday and Friday.

With the game between City and Madrid due to take place in just under two weeks, this would mean there would not be enough time for Madrid's players and coaching staff to follow the guidelines and then play the match.

A UEFA source told Spanish publication AS that talks would begin immediately to try to find a solution to the problem, and that the decision on whether the game can go ahead may ultimately be down to the UK government.

One of the more likely outcomes is that Madrid will be granted a special exemption to travel to England and play, although this may draw anger from those who have been affected by the rules.

Alternatively, the game could go ahead at a neutral venue, although City would be in their rights to complain that they have lost home advantage and that the tie had been skewed in favour of Madrid.

Whatever the case, a final decision will surely have to be made over the coming days given the small time-frame available to work with before the clash is due to take place.
