Man City turn rainwater on Etihad Stadium roof into beer

Manchester City celebrated their Premier League title triumph with a beer made from rainwater collected from the Etihad Stadium roof.

Commentator Martin Tyler urged Blues fans to “drink it in” when they won the title in dramatic circumstances in 2012.

And after another thrilling last-day triumph, now supporters literally can sup a little taste of glory.

City have teamed up with brewers Heineken and water technology company Xylem to brew a commemorative beer from water gathered during the frequent downpours this season.

The beer, called “Raining Champions”, also has a serious point, in raising awareness about the rising difficulties faced by many countries due to environmental changes.

Recycled water is increasingly being used, and Xylem purified rainwater collected from the stadium roof before handing it to Heineken’s Manchester brewery to produce the brew.

Damien Willoughby, senior vice-president of partnerships at City Football Group, said: “Brewing a beer from rainwater collected from the heart of our football club is a fantastic and creative way to celebrate Manchester City winning another Premier League title.

“Together with Xylem,we hope this will inspire fans to do their bit and make a difference.”

Heineken manager Stephen Moore said: “We were really pleased to be able to help our Manchester neighbours out by brewing a beer in our on-site micro-brewery.

“This is the first time we’ve brewed a beer using purified rainwater – and now Manchester City fans can toast their team with a beer fit for the reigning champions!”
