Man City turn coronavirus postponements into a huge positive

Manchester City have turned the postponement of their scheduled matches into a positive by going to the aid of local charities.

The Blues were hit last week by the call-off of their Premier League game with Arsenal after the coronavirus crisis forced several Gunners players into self-isolation.

And that was quickly followed by the postponement of next Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid, for similar reasons, and then the Premier League's decision to call off the entire domestic professional football programme until April 4.

The suddenness of the postponements meant that City had a glut of food on their hands, after ordering their usual matchday supplies from caterers F3.

But the food which should have been sold last Wednesday night was donated to The Longford Centre, a homeless prevention centre in Chorlton , and to Open Kitchen Manchester which takes food going to waste and uses it at conference and events, the money being used to support people struggling to afford food.

The Blues have also donated the catering from today’s postponed game against Burnley to four local charities, while the flowers ordered for executive areas of the stadium have been sent to a care home in Newton Heath .

The elderly residents are unable to receive visitors due to the coronavirus pandemic and City said in a statement: “We hope this small gesture helps brighten Brookdale View for the residents at this difficult time.”
