Man City to speak to Phil Foden over breach of government guidelines

Manchester City will remind Phil Foden of his responsibilities after the youngster was caught flouting the government guidance on social distancing.

Foden, who turned 20 last week, was spotted at Formby Beach playing football with other members of the public and posing for photos with them while not keeping the two-metre distance that the UK government has instructed everyone to maintain despite lockdown measures being eased. Footballers are back in full contact sessions with their clubs ahead of the Premier League returning but have to abide by the same guidance as everyone else away from training grounds.

As well as that breach, Foden also risked injury with his spontaneous kickabout. The club will speak to the player to remind him of what is expected but will not be investigating further or handing out any punishment and the youngster continues to train with Pep Guardiola and the first-team squad ahead of the resumption of the Premier League in two weeks' time.

Foden's teammate Kyle Walker made unwanted headlines for two separate breaches of lockdown while the strictest regulations were imposed on the country.

The City and England defender was forced to apologise in April after The Sun reported that he had held a party with two sex workers at his home. His behaviour was criticised in a statement by the club, who are conducting a disciplinary investigation on the matter. The same newspaper then broke the news that he had visited his sister and his parents, although the club opted against further punishment for this as it viewed the circumstances as significantly different from the first offence.
