Man City to face Preston North End in Carabao Cup round three

Manchester City will open their defence of the Carabao Cup against Preston North End at Deepdale.

City have won the competition for the last two seasons, beating Arsenal in 2018 and Chelsea in 2019. They can become the first side since 1984 to win the competition three seasons in succession, when Liverpool were victorious four times between 1981 and 1984.

Pep Guardiola is known to take the competition seriously, and will use the third round tie to rotate his squad while still aiming to progress to the next stage.

City have won their last 10 ties in the competition since a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United in 2016, and can continue their brilliant run in domestic competitions with a win against Alex Neil's Preston.

Guardiola's men have won seven of the last eight domestic trophies on offer - starting with the 2018 win in this competition.

Preston are currently sixth in the Championship after five games, and the tie will take place on the week commencing September 23.
