Man City team vs Liverpool confirmed as Gabriel Jesus starts

Gabriel Jesus is making just his second start of the season for Manchester City against Liverpool on Sunday.

Though the heavyweight encounter isn't a top-of-the-table clash like it has been in their last few meetings, the match could have serious ramifications for the rest of the Premier League season.

A win for City could see them close the gap on Liverpool to just two points with a game in hand, though a loss would see it be stretched to a hefty eight.

It's clear how important the game is to Pep Guardiola as he has thrown caution to the wind and started Jesus.

The Brazilian only made his return from a lengthy spell on the sidelines as a late substitute in Tuesday's 3-0 victory against Olympiacos, but his introduction helped City secure the three points as he scored an excellent solo goal.

Guardiola has warned that he was wary of rushing Jesus back into action and risking aggravating his injury further but there has been no such apprehension shown for today's game, despite the fact Sergio Aguero was recently lost again just after making his comeback.

Elsewhere, the impressive Ferran Torres, who has played well as the central striker recently, has been moved to the right side of the attack with Raheem Sterling taking up his spot on the left.

The Blues boss has opted for the more defensive midfield of Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri, alongside Kevin De Bruyne, with the settled back five of Ederson, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte and Joao Cancelo completing the line-up.

Riyad Mahrez is not in the squad.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have been boosted by the return of Joel Matip at centre-back and have crammed the red-hot Diogo Jota into the side with their famed front three.

Man City starting XI: Ederson; Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo; De Bruyne, Rodri, Gundogan; Torres, Jesus, Sterling.

Substitutes: Steffen, Stones, Ake, Zinchenko, Bernardo, Foden, Garcia.

Liverpool starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Gomez, Robertson; Henderson, Wijnaldum, Jota, Mane, Salah; Firmino.

Substitutes: Adrian, Milner, Keita, Jones, Shaqiri, Origi, Phillips.
