Man City striker Sergio Aguero undergoes knee surgery amid growing injury fears

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has undergone knee surgery.

The Argentine striker limped out of City’s 5-0 win over Burnley on Monday night.

The club’s record goalscorer was clutching his left knee both before and after a foul by Ben Mee for which City were awarded a penalty.

After the match Pep Guardiola voiced his fears that Aguero's campaign may be over.

And Aguero duly flew to Barcelona on Tuesday to meet with doctor Ramon Cugat.

Now, after an examination on his knee, Aguero has gone under the knife.

On Wednesday the player tweeted: "Everything went well and I will soon start with the recovery.

"Thank you so much to Dr. Cugat and his team and everyone for so much support."

However, there remains uncertainty over the full extent of the injury, with Guardiola uncertain over when Aguero will be able to return.

"We’ll find out tomorrow after he’s seen the specialist how bad the injury to Sergio is, we will know more tomorrow," said the City boss.

"He [Dr. Cugat] will tell us with more accuracy when he can come back."

Aguero, 31, almost certainly will not play again in the 2019-20 campaign.

But it looks increasingly likely that he faces missing the start of the 2020-21 season also.

City head to Chelsea on Thursday night with Guardiola set to start with Gabriel Jesus as the focal point of his side's attack.

But the Spaniard also talked up the possibility of Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva potentially operating as 'False Nines', with Guardiola wary of the quick run of games City are facing.

"Gabriel Jesus has played alongside Aguero - we have no doubts about him he is a great player on the pitch and in the locker room.

"Sterling, [Ilkay] Gundogan and Bernardo can play there.

"Our concern is not whether Gabriel is good enough, it’s playing every three days.

"We can’t deny we have one eye on the Newcastle game. We can’t deny we have one eye on the Newcastle game.

"Chelsea is a prestigious game but Newcastle is a final for us."
