Man City striker Sergio Aguero reacts to landmark goal for the club

Sergio Aguero believes he was destined to become Manchester City's record goalscorer on a frenzied night in Naples in 2017.

The prolific goalscorer went into the Champions League game level with Eric Brook on 177 goals for the club but Pep Guardiola's side were made to work in what was one of their toughest games of the season.

Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones both made the scoresheet to put the Blues ahead just after half-time against the run of play after the home team had dominated the opening half-hour, and a Jorginho penalty levelled the scored with a third of the game to play.

With 20 minutes to go, the ball popped into Aguero's path after a sprinting Leroy Sane had been tackled and the Argentine showed the composure and precision required to put City into the lead on the night and move him to the top of the goalscoring charts.

Looking back on the match as part of a series for the club website, Aguero called it destiny that the ball came to him.

“Napoli came close to scoring a third but Ederson saved it and then we scored on the counterattack,” he said.

“When Leroy got the ball I thought ‘ciao!’, but then he fell down, and the ball just came to me… and that was beautiful! I had very clear idea that I wanted to put the ball in the bottom corner, just inside the post.

“The goal was beautiful; I just had broken the record. That was a fantastic night.

“Destiny wanted me to score it. If you watch it again, Leroy falls down and the ball could have gone to Kevin or anywhere else, but it came to me.

“I was happy because of the goal and it was a nice one too!

“Raheem scored again in added time and we won the game 4-2 – it is a great memory and I night I will never forget.”
