Man City starting line-up vs Marseille confirmed as Sergio Aguero returns and Aymeric Laporte starts

Pep Guardiola has named a strong starting XI for Manchester City's final Champions League group game against Marseille, with Sergio Aguero returning on the bench.

City have nothing to play for tonight after securing top spot in last week's hard-fought draw at Porto, so fans were hoping to see some of the club's exciting starlets get a chance from the start for the visit of the French side.

However, the game isn't quite as dead a rubber for Marseille, who can still qualify for the Europa League, and Guardiola has opted to show respect to the competition by naming a strong line-up, even though nine changes have been made.

The Blues boss has kept to the promise he made on Saturday to the players who sat on the bench in the win against Fulham and they have all come into the side.

That includes goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who starts as expected with Ederson given the night off. In front of him Kyle Walker has been brought back into the side after not being involved at the weekend, perhaps a surprising decision considering Saturday's upcoming Manchester derby. Nathan Ake has also returned to the team, though he is filling in at left-back.

In the middle of the back-line Aymeric Laporte has come in for his first appearance in five games after being unused since his costly mistake to Tottenham and could remind Guardiola of his qualities ahead of the trip to Old Trafford. Eric Garcia partners him.

Ilkay Gundogan is one of the players to keep his place and he has been joined by Fernandinho and Bernardo Silva, with Rodri not involved due to a minor knock.

Riyad Mahrez has also retained his spot while, as expected, Ferran Torres and Phil Foden have been drafted into the attack.

There's good news on the bench as Aguero is back following his latest injury setback and youngsters Tommy Doyle, Cole Palmer, Felix Nmecha and Adrian Bernabe have all been selected.

With five substitutes permitted in Europe we could see Guardiola give the teenagers a chance and hand Aguero some much-needed minutes ahead of the game with Manchester United.

City starting XI: Steffen; Walker, Garcia, Laporte, Ake; Bernardo, Fernandinho, Gundogan; Mahrez, Torres, Foden.

Substitutes: Carson, Stones, Sterling, Jesus, Aguero, De Bruyne, Mendy, Cancelo, Nmecha, Doyle, Palmer, Bernabe.
