Man City starlet Cole Palmer compared to Lionel Messi after England U21s win

Had things turned out a little differently, Lionel Messi might have touched down at Manchester City this summer.

Having coasted to a third Premier League title in four seasons, the champions were linked with the Barcelona icon as he prepared to wave goodbye to his beloved Nou Camp.

A couple of twists and turns later he eventually settled on PSG - with his first goal for the big-spending French side coming against Pep Guardiola and City.

Messi this, Messi that. There is a new silky-skilled and elusive left-footed player in town.

Cole Palmer has been tipped for big things since making his mark in the City academy.

The 19-year-old has already been handed a senior debut by Guardiola and, after goals in his first two appearances for England U21s, the attacking midfielder played his part with another eye-catching performance during a battling 1-0 victory over Andorra tonight.

Here are a selection of comments made about Palmer by England supporters on social media;

@JosephMUFC said: "Cole Palmer is being called Lionel Palmer from now on."

@PoznanBoys posted: "First time watching Cole Palmer and I'm impressed. Very silky and elusive on the ball. He's like a slightly more normal version of [Riyad] Mahrez."

@WolvesNumber37 added: "Cole Palmer has been the bright spark for England."

@AFCSmithShow posted: "Cole Palmer is too cold."

@Billy_Hells added: "Cole Palmer is a serious player. Would not look out of place in City's line-up for sure."
