Man City star Raheem Sterling planning documentary on his childhood in London

Raheem Sterling is planning a short documentary on his childhood in London to help young people growing up in the capital.

The Manchester City and England star, who grew up in Harlesden before moving to Liverpool aged 15, has become an inspiration to millions and says he wants to “give the next generation hope”.

Speaking after collecting his Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year award, Sterling said: “I am thinking of doing a small documentary just on my life experiences in London and trying to give kids an insight into what I and my friends are going through.

“I want to show kids that if you are with a group of friends, keep them on the straight and narrow. Going to school in Harlesden you had to be really careful.

"When I had the opportunity to go to Liverpool I took it. It was nice to be isolated and be focused on becoming a footballer. I will always be grateful to Liverpool for that.”

Sterling has also played a leading role in tackling discrimination, as well as challenging the media over their representation of black players.
