Man City star Raheem Sterling nominated for BBC Sport Personality of the Year award

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has been nominated for the 2021 BBC Sport Sport Personality of the Year.

Sterling, who scored the winner for City in their 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday lunchtime, is one of six people shortlisted for the award.

The City star faces competition from diver Tom Daley, boxer Tyson Fury, swimmer Adam Peaty, tennis star Emma Raducanu and Paralympian cyclist Dame Sarah Storey.

Sterling has experienced a memorable 2021 for no shortage of reasons, not least his starring role in helping England reach the final of the European Championship.

The winger scored the Three Lions' first three goals at the tournament, including their first in the famous 2-0 win over Germany in the last-16 stage at Wembley.

He was a key figure in Gareth Southgate's plans and flew the flag for the national team, cementing himself as a national icon.

On the City stage, Sterling helped Pep Guardiola's side reach their first-ever UEFA Champions League final, lift another Premier League title and the Carabao Cup. Although the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League final was heartbreaking for everyone connected with City, it still remains a historic achievement for the football club.

In 2021, Sterling, to date, has scored 13 goals for City in all competitions and has recently forced his way back into the fold at the Etihad Stadium, following a difficult period out of the team.

Despite the ongoing concerns of the pandemic, the Sports Personality of the Year award will be held in person, but without an audience. It will take place this coming Sunday - December 19 - at the MediaCity in Salford and will be shown live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website.

Gary Lineker, Clare Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott will host the awards, with historic US Open winner Raducanu the early favourite.

Lewis Hamilton, who was pipped to the Formula 1 World Championship on Sunday by Max Verstappen, won the Sports Personality of the Year award last year for equalling Michael Schumacher's tally of seven world championships.
