Man City star Phil Foden sets new England goal after making 'dream' debut

Phil Foden says making his senior England debut was a dream come true, as he set himself the goal of becoming a regular for his country.

The Manchester City attacking midfielder started his first England game as a late Raheem Sterling penalty gave them a 1-0 victory over Iceland.

Foden has been a key part of the under-21s for the last 18-months, but England boss Gareth Southgate had challenged him to get regular playing time in the Premier League before being considered for a debut senior call-up.

But after a number of impressive performances for City towards the end of last season, Foden was rewarded with a place in Southgate's Nations League squad and then a start against Iceland.

And speaking to Sky Sports, Foden said the game was a big moment for him and also his family as the 20-year-old also praised the way England stuck at their task after being frustrated for long periods.

He said: "It feels amazing, a dream come true. It’s a big moment for me and my family, so, yeah, I enjoyed it a lot."

Foden added: "It was a very difficult game, they defended well. We showed great character to stick in the game and luckily we got the penalty at the end and scored.

"They had a chance at the end as well, but overall, to get the win is massive for the country."

Foden feels the demands of playing for City and playing for England are similar due to the high standard of his teammates.

He says his next task is to try and become a regular for England after his debut.

"A very high standard. I play for Man City and I’m now playing for England - it’s very similar," he explained.

"It’s a very high standard, so I’m just going to try and enjoy it the most that I can and learn from the players.

"I wanna keep playing for my country - not just a one-off - I just need to keep playing well and enjoying my football. Hopefully I can keep the shirt."
