Man City star Phil Foden lifts the lid on his relationship with Pep Guardiola

Phil Foden says the confidence showed in him by Pep Guardiola gives him the belief to perform at the best of his ability for Manchester City.

The 18-year-old has scored six goals in 24 appearances for the Blues this season, and became the youngest English player to score in a Champions League knockout game with his strike in City's 7-0 victory against Schalke last month.

Guardiola has repeatedly insisted that Foden is at the forefront of his plans for the Blues, despite the midfielder's peers enjoying more game time elsewhere.

And Foden says it's his dream to play for the most exciting team in City's history.

"It gives you a lot of confidence and it's good to know the manager believes in you," the England under-21 international told mancity.com of his relationship with Guardiola.

"It only helps you on the pitch, it makes you pray freely.

How Man City have coped with the disadvantage they face vs Tottenham in Champions League quarter-final

"It's my dream being in this team, it means a lot playing in a team like this. I'm learning every day and getting a lot of experience.

"I used to go to the games with my mum. It was very special to watch what they were doing and how the club was getting better.

"Being a part of it growing up and seeing how it changed was really good. Now I'm playing in the stadium it's crazy to think that that's happened, but I'm enjoying it all."

Riyad Mahrez pinpoints the key to Man City beating Tottenham in the Champions League

Jadon Sancho, whose meteoric rise at Borussia Dortmund has seen him become a full England international, was in the same youth team as Foden at City, but the midfielder feels he is at the right place to continue his development, particularly with David Silva at the club as a reference point.

"I'm still young and I've still got time to improve in a lot of areas," he explained. "I'm just taking it day by day and enjoying my football.

"We [Foden and David Silva] have a good relationship and he helps me out sometimes. He's my idol, really. I've loved watching him play and I've been a massive fan of him."
