Man City star Kevin De Bruyne reveals why he played in different position against Newcastle United

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has revealed that he was asked to play in a deeper position by Pep Guardiola because Newcastle play five at the back.

The Belgian once again impressed as his side booked their place in the last four of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

De Bruyne put his side ahead in the first half from the penalty spot before Raheem Sterling added a second midway through the second period.

He has now been directly involved in 30 goals for City this season - more than any of his team-mates.

"In my career I have played lots of positions and the gaffer asked me to try something new because Newcastle play with a back five. I just work for the team," he told Match of the Day after the game.

De Bruyne also revealed afterwards that he is not a fan of games being played behind closed doors. All matches in the Premier League and FA Cup have been played without spectators in attendance since they restarted due to the current social distancing measures in place.

He said: "We know it is really weird [playing behind closed doors] and it is not something I enjoy, but we are professionals and we need to keep going."

Before adding on his penalty: "We started really well, were sharp and put them under pressure. We should have scored more.

“We had a few problems with penalties this year. The gaffer asked me to step up and I have scored a couple now.''

Guardiola's side will now face Arsenal in the semi-finals after the Gunners booked their place in the last four by defeating Sheffield United 2-1.

The tie will be played in mid-July, while the final is to be held at Wembley Stadium on August 1 following the conclusion of the Premier League season.
