Man City star Kevin De Bruyne on three-man shortlist to be named best player in Europe

Kevin De Bruyne is one of three players fighting it out for Uefa’s player of the year trophy.

The Manchester City midfielder is pitted against Bayern Munich pair Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer in the three-man short-list.

The winner will be announced at the Champions League draw next Thursday, October 1.

De Bruyne has already been named player of the year by both the Premier League and the Professional Footballers Association, while he was beaten to the football writers’ award by Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson.

Lewandowski is favourite to win the Uefa award after scoring an astonishing 15 goals in 10 Champions League matches as Bayern stormed to victory in the competition. On top of that he netted 34 in 31 league games, and six in five German Cup games, ending with season stats of 55 goals in 47 games.

Neuer was also exceptional in the Champions League, denying Paris St Germain with some fine goalkeeping in the final.

De Bruyne equalled Thierry Henry’s Premier League assists record and was in breathtaking form for the Blues throughout the season.

Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk won the award last year, with Real Madrid star Luka Modric taking it the year before – before that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have won it three times each, with Andres Iniesta and Franck Ribery the only other players to in it.

Lucy Bronze, who returned to City from Lyon in the summer transfer window, is on the short-list for the women’s award.
