A summer that couldn't have started worse for Joao Cancelo has certainly turned around after he announced his engagement to his partner.
The Manchester City defender was ready to help Portugal defend their European Championship crown at the start of June as he was named in Fernando Santos' squad for Euro 2020 along with club teammates Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias.
However, Cancelo was forced to withdraw from the squad for the tournament after testing positive for coronavirus ahead of Portugal's opening game.
The full-back had travelled to Budapest with the squad as they prepared to face Hungary on June 15, but was the only member of the group to return a positive Covid-19 test, meaning his tournament was over before it even began.
An official statement added: "The Hungarian health authorities were immediately informed and the player – who is doing well – was placed in isolation."
The reigning champions didn't fare well without Cancelo, only managing to qualify from their group as one of the best third-placed teams before then being eliminated by Belgium in the last-16.
After completing a period of isolation, Cancelo went on holiday with his partner, Daniela Machado, to the Maldives where the pair have now got engaged. Both took to Instagram on Sunday to post stunning photos and announce their engagement to the world.
