Man City star Ilkay Gundogan spends time at children's charity Wood Street Mission on his birthday

Ilkay Gundogan enjoyed some of his 29th birthday at Wood Street Mission in Manchester helping to sort donations after bringing gifts of his own.

The Manchester City midfielder, who was Pep Guardiola's first signing in 2016, went down to the city centre charity on Thursday where he spent time with staff and families.

Wood Street Mission, celebrating its 150th year, helps low-income families in Manchester and Salford to improve children's wellbeing and development and also raises awareness of child poverty.

The children's charity tweeted: "Happy Birthday and thank you Ilkay Gundogan for visiting us today and bringing us so many wonderful and generous gifts. The families loved meeting you and you were a great help sorting donations with our team. You are always very welcome."

Gundogan quickly took to life in Manchester city centre after joining from Borussia Dortmund. Speaking a year after his move, he said: "I like the restaurants, the bars, the atmosphere when it's the weekend all the people are outside having a good time. It's quite busy."

The German midfielder signed a new contract at the club in August that keeps him at the Etihad until 2023, having established himself as an important player in Guardiola's talented squad after overcoming a number of serious injuries in his first season.
