Ilkay Gundogan has revealed how he reached out to Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool were declared Premier League champions in June.
A 2-1 defeat for Gundogan's Manchester City at Chelsea back on June 25 was enough to seal a first league title in 30 years for the Reds, 24 hours after they had put Crystal Palace to the sword with a 4-0 win at Anfield.
The Reds celebrated the result at a special party in Merseyside's Formby Hall Golf Resort with a video of Klopp's dancing celebrations later going viral on social media.
After wrapping up the title in a record-quick time of just 31 games, Klopp's side were given seven guards of honour for their remaining fixtures, including at the Etihad where Gundogan clapped the opposition on to the pitch in Manchester.
Gundogan played under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund for five years before moving to the Etihad.
And the German international midfielder explained how he put club allegiances aside to reach out to his former boss.
Asked if he contacted Klopp in the aftermath of Liverpool's title triumph, he told Bild, via Sport Witness: “Of course, I like him very much and had great years with him at Borussia Dortmund.
“I congratulated him right after the championship and he later sent me a few smileys back.
"I don’t know exactly what the alcohol level was at the moment, but I assume that he was happy!"
After establishing a 25-point gap over Manchester City prior to the suspension of the Premier League in mid-March, Liverpool eventually finished 18 ahead of Pep Guardiola's side.
