Man City star Ilkay Gundogan assesses Kai Havertz and Timo Werner's starts at Chelsea

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is confident that Kai Havertz and Timo Werner 'will improve' after a difficult start to life at new club Chelsea.

Frank Lampard's side were the summer's heavy spenders after they splashed out over £200million on new signings, with nearly £150miilion of it being spent on the highly-rated German duo.

However, the pair have struggled for form in the Premier League as of late and have just 12 goals between them in all competitions.

Gundogan is an international teammate with them both, as well as Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger, and he believes that it's only a matter of time before they both realise their full potential.

While previewing City's trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Gundogan told City's official site: “It will be an exciting, interesting game on Sunday.

"Two teams with two great players and ambitious managers playing against each other. The fact we lost our last game at Stamford Bridge should motivate us more. We have quality to do it and that’s what we want to achieve.

"It’s not easy for them. I am quite close with Antonio Rudiger and he is not centre-back No. 1 - but when he gets gametime he tries to do as good as possible and help the team.

"With Havertz and Werner, coming from a different league and different country – one that is competitive and challenging – it is not always easy, especially when you are young like they are.

"And with the Coronavirus situation it makes it harder. It takes time to adapt. It’s a different league, different players and a different kind of football.

"But I am sure they will adapt, improve step by step. I am confident they will be happy over here in England over the next few years.”
