Man City star Bernardo Silva suffers injury on Portugal duty

Bernardo Silva was forced off early in Portugal's win over Sweden on Tuesday evening to give Manchester City cause for concern ahead of the new season.

The 26-year-old appeared to suffer a muscle injury putting in a cross for teammate Pepe and was substituted shortly afterwards in the 22nd minute when it was clear he could not continue. He was able to walk unassisted around the pitch back to the team bench to raise hopes that any lay-off may not be long, although a timescale has not yet been given.

City will have to wait and see the severity as preparations continue for their opening Premier League game away to Wolves a week on Monday.

While the first players to arrive back at the training ground in Manchester have been working for almost a fortnight, there have been a number of other disruptions in what has been a pre-season like no other as the pandemic continues to impact on plans.

More than a dozen stars have been away with their countries on international duty, Pep Guardiola was forced to quarantine after the UK announced restrictions on arrivals from Spain and Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Lapore are self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Premier League gets underway this weekend but City were allowed a delayed start because of their participation in the knockout rounds of the Champions League. With their opening fixture being moved to a Monday night for TV scheduling, most teams will have played twice before they begin their campaign.
