Man City star backed by Sam Allardyce to win Player of the Year over Liverpool FC's Virgil van Dijk

Star striker Sergio Aguero has been backed to win the PFA Player of the Year ahead of Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and his Man City team mate Raheem Sterling by Sam Allardyce.

It looks set to be hotly contested race this season with the likes of Bernardo Silva, Sadio Mane, Eden Hazard and Fernandinho all in contention as well.

Though it appears the trio of Aguero, Sterling and Van Dijk are the favourites for the coveted prize after all have enjoyed incredible seasons.

Dutch centre-back Van Dijk has been the Liverpool's most important player as they continue to battle for the Premier League title with City, while Sterling has grown into an extraordinary player, scoring 19 goals in all competitions.

Yet it's outside choice Aguero who Allardyce has backed for the acolade.

The Argentine striker has produced yet another sublime goal return this season, scoring 26 goals in all competitions, but has famously been snubbed for awards in the past.

He some how only managed to make the PFA Team of the Year for the first time last season despite scoring 122 goals in the six seasons previously.

Though this year he may get the appreciation he deserves.

“It’s a tough one, there are definitely some good candidates this year, but I’d go for Aguero,” Allardyce told TalkSport.

“Aguero has never won it and he deserves it for what he’s done over the years.

“I think everyone would probably favour Raheem Sterling at the moment with the way he’s going and the publicity he’s getting.

“But I think it’s taken for granted for Aguero is doing, and what he always does for Manchester City.

“So I’d like to see Aguero win it. Raheem Sterling is still young enough to win Young Player of the Year!”

Aguero is currently the third favourite to win the gong at 14/1, with Sterling ahead of him at 3/1 and Van Dijk is leading the way at 4/11.
