Man City stance on signing Sergio Ramos after Real Madrid departure

Manchester City will not be involved in any scramble to sign Sergio Ramos on a free transfer.

The veteran Spain defender has said his goodbyes at the Bernabeu, a surprise departure from Real Madrid after 16 years. Ramos had been unable to agree a new deal with the club unwilling to offer him the two-year contract that he wanted, and he will now be available on a free transfer from the beginning of July when his current deal ends.

City had been linked with the 35-year-old earlier this year amid speculation over his future but M.E.N Sport reported at the time that the Blues were not interested in pursuing a deal for Ramos. Even now that Ramos has been confirmed as a free agent, City's position has not changed as they pursue other positions in the transfer window.

Ramos was also a surprise omission from the Spain squad for this summer's European Championship.

City defender Aymeric Laporte was brought straight in after switching allegiances from France after years of being ignored by their national team coach, while Eric Garcia was also picked following his switch from City to Barcelona.

City's plan at centre-back this summer will hinge on the future of Laporte amid interest from Barcelona, but it is not thought that Ramos will come into the equation. The bulk of the budget will be spent on a Sergio Aguero replacement, with additional funds potentially available through the sale of current squad players.
