Man City stance on signing Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos on free transfer

Manchester City are not interested in signing Sergio Ramos on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Real Madrid's captain could be out of contract in summer with the 34-year-old yet to agree terms on a new deal despite determination from both camps. With the veteran defender free to negotiate with other clubs from this month, the Blues have been credited with an interest.

Pep Guardiola knows well the qualities of Ramos. As well as coming up against him regularly when he was in charge of Barcelona, the Champions League last-16 tie last season turned back into City's favour when the centre-back was shown a red card towards the end of the first leg.

City would have the means to afford Ramos's wages should they want to do a deal, but they also boast the meanest defence in the Premier League following a spend of more than £100m on centre-backs in the most recent transfer window.

Ruben Dias, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake should not need replacing any time soon, and there are promising centre-backs pushing through the academy in Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Luke Mbete.

The priority for the club in the next transfer market remains a marquee centre-forward, and that need has been intensified by problems with the only two strikers on their books. Sergio Aguero is coming towards the end of his contract at the Etihad and injury issues have limited the 32-year-old to just two starts this season, while Gabriel Jesus has also struggled with fitness and form..
