Man City signing Sergio Gomez explains why he chose No.21 squad number

Sergio Gomez is aiming to continue the strong Spanish heritage of the No.21 shirt at Manchester City.

The Blues announced left-back Gomez as their fifth arrival of the summer transfer window after agreeing an £11million transfer with Anderlecht. The 21-year-old has been brought in as a replacement for Aleks Zinchenko and has signed a contract at the Etihad until 2023.

When Gomez was young, his brother went on a school trip to London so he asked him to bring him back a City shirt with David Silva's name and number on the back. Now he will wear No.21 himself, which has strong Spanish lineage at City with it last being worn by Ferran Torres.

Gomez has revealed that he chose the jersey as he aims to be the latest Spaniard to do it justice at City. “It's a privilege and makes me really proud being able to wear the number 21," he said.

"David Silva wore it, also Ferran Torres. So, I'm going to continue the Spanish connection with the number. I'll try to honour the number as best as possible.”

Gomez will be joining fellow Spaniards Rodri and Aymeric Laporte at City and he can't wait to begin working with his compatriots. He added: “It's always important to have players from your country in the squad.

"When you play abroad, it makes the transition easier. I'm looking forward to meeting them and training with them. I'm sure they are going to help me a lot, the same as the rest of the players in the squad.”
