Man City set to sign Kilmarnock prospect Liam Smith for £200,000 after beating off Liverpool FC competition

Manchester City are expected to complete the signing of Kilmarnock youngster Liam Smith for £200,000.

Pep Guardiola is not planning a busy January window for the first team but the club are busy recruiting for the future, with Smith coming in to join the Elite Development Squad.

The 17-year-old winger attracted the interest of a number of clubs over the last year including Liverpool and Rangers. Despite not making his senior debut, he impressed the Blues enough for them to convince him of a move and strike a deal with the Scottish club.

Smith's arrival is the latest in a string of signings aimed to bolster competition in the academy; Oscar Bobb, Samuel Edozie, Oscar Tarensi and Liam Delap all joined the club last summer.

City's EDS secured an important win over Liverpool on Sunday with Jayden Braaf scoring the only goal of the game to move them five points clear of Southampton in last place. Former academy forward Joe Hardy made his Liverpool debut in the game, having signed from Brentford B.

Paul Harsley takes his young Blues to Scunthorpe in the last-16 of the EFL Trophy on Wednesday. They reached the last eight of the competition last season and are dreaming of going even better this season but must get past the League Two side this week to stand a chance of doing so.
