Man City set to complete shock deal for Derby County goalkeeper Scott Carson

Manchester City have moved to bring in Derby County goalkeeper Scott Carson on deadline day.

Pep Guardiola has already strengthened his squad this summer with the acquisitions of holding midfielder Rodri and defenders Angelino and Joao Cancelo. The centre of defence looks light still with no replacement yet for Vincent Kompany, who ended last season as a first team regular.

However, the Blues have sprung a surprise by plumping for 33-year-old Carson on a season-long loan to add to their options.

Ederson remains No.1 at the club and Claudio Bravo has cemented his position as deputy with a fine performance in the Community Shield win over Liverpool. The club were looking at 35-year-old Eibar stopper Asier Riesgo as a third-choice, who was known by assistant Mikel Arteta and goalkeeping coach Xabi Mancisidor.

However, with City already having too many non-homegrown players in their squad Carson has emerged as a surprise target. The former Liverpool and England keeper has been with Championship side Derby since 2015 and was a key figure in their run to the play-off final last season.

Carson's arrival would suggest a move away from the club, either on loan or permanently, for 21-year-old Daniel Grimshaw. The academy graduate was No.3 last season but may want regular football to help him develop.

Fellow goalkeepers Zack Steffen and Aro Muric have already headed out for loans, at Fortuna Dusseldorf and Nottingham Forest respectively.
