Man City set record Women's Super League crowd with Manchester United clash

Manchester City set a Women's Super League attendance record in the opening game of the new season with 31,213 turning up at the Etihad.

The previous record was 5,265 set last season at the Amex Stadium as Arsenal beat Brighton to be crowned Super League champions.

The Football Association decided to use the uplift in interest in women's football off the back of the World Cup this summer to arrange the fixtures for the opening weekend of the season with the being played at the Etihad.

While the decision to play at the bigger grounds has divided opinions in the past Saturday afternoon's season opener was a hit with 31,213 turning up for the historic occassion.

But it is expected the record won't last for long.

Chelsea host Tottenham on Sunday at Stamford Bridge and over 40,000 people were expected which would eclipse the number present at the Etihad on Saturday.
