Man City's squad depth is impressive, but two positions lack options

Now that transfer deadline day has been and gone, Manchester City fans can once again turn their attentions to what really matters: events on the pitch over the course of 90 minutes.

With none of last season's key players departing and the £100m addition of Jack Grealish, City's squad is undoubtedly stronger than it was last season.

City have been blessed with multiple options in all positions in recent years, although there are a few areas of the team that are a little lightweight compared to others. Here's our ranking of the depth at each position.

Goalkeepers

Ederson is the nailed on starter of course, and on Wednesday signed a new five-year contract to keep him at the club until 2026. However, it shouldn't be understated how good a goalkeeper Zack Steffen is.

The United States international made 13 appearances last season, putting in some fine displays to stake his claim as the best back-up keeper in the country.

Let's not forget Scott Carson either. The veteran stopper isn't at the club to play, but as Pep Guardiola has attested to, he is a great personality to have in the dressing room and has taught Ederson and Steffen a lot.

Rating: 9/10

Right-back

In Kyle Walker, City have arguably the best right-back in the league. The Sheffield native has rarely put in a bad game since he joined from Tottenham in 2017, dismissing accusations of being a pace merchant with some fantastic defensive displays. His passing ability makes City's right-hand flank a daunting proposition for defenders.

For part of last season we saw that Joao Cancelo is a more than capable alternative to Walker, particularly given his ability to move infield as an inverted fullback.

Rating: 8/10

Centre-backs

After the years of struggling to find a decent partner for Vincent Kompany, City now have three world-class central defenders to rotate.

Ruben Dias and John Stones formed an unlikely yet formidable pairing last season, but so far this campaign a reportedly unsettled Aymeric Laporte is doing a fine job of making himself undroppable. If Guardiola can get rotation right and keep all three happy, City won't be conceding many goals this season.

Nathan Ake is the fourth choice, and truth be told, it's be some distance. In fairness, he has never really had a fair crack at a starting berth and suffered rotten luck with injuries last term, so it's certainly not time to give up on the Dutchman.

Rating: 9/10

Left-back

City's Achilles heel has still not been addressed, an oversight that may once again come back to bite them.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is the only left-footed option in the squad to have played significant minutes at left-back, but while he's impressed in recent years, he isn't on the same level as Walker on the right.

Joao Cancelo can play there, but playing a right-footer there means the team loses width. Ake and Laporte have both filled in before but struggled in an unfamiliar role.

Defensive midfielder

In Fernandinho and Rodri City have the master and the apprentice.

At 36-years-old the former has shown signs of slowing down, although he is probably still better than the latter when it comes to the dark arts.

Rodri joined City from Atletico Madrid two years ago and after a slow start has definitely progressed. While he's not as nimble or agile as Fernandinho, he excels in terms of passing and vision.

Number eights

Assuming Guardiola sticks with a 4-3-3 system throughout the season, then City will usually line-up with two eights.

Kevin De Bruyne is the best creator in the Premier League, if not the world, but the other options aren't half bad.

City have added Jack Grealish, the second best creative talent in the league, to their ranks, making City's midfield arguably the strongest around.

Ilkay Gundogan was the main beneficiary of the false nine system last season, his runs into the space vacated by a traditional striker allowing him to score 13 goals.

If recent performances against Norwich and Arsenal are anything to go by, Bernardo Silva has shown that his performance levels will not dip despite failing to secure a move away from Manchester.

While Guardiola prefers to deploy Phil Foden on the left-wing, the Stockport Iniesta is just as good in a more central role. The latest academy graduate to join the first team squad, Cole Palmer, played there in pre-season.

Rating: 10/10

Right-wing

Riyad Mahrez finally silenced his critics last season, producing performances akin to his best form at Leicester City. He looked to have the right-flank spot nailed down heading into the season, but the emergence of Gabriel Jesus as a wing option has been an unexpected development.

Jesus scored once and provided three assists over consecutive 5-0 wins against Norwich and Arsenal, and Guardiola has said that he prefers him on the right rather than as a number nine. The pair of them give City the best right-wing in the league.

Ferran Torres' natural position is on the right-flank, although he is now considered a striker.

Rating: 8/10

Left-wing

City have an embarrassment of riches on the left too. Raheem Sterling has been the long-term first choice in recent years, although as we saw last season, Foden will provide his England teammate with some stiff competition.

Grealish is also well suited to the wing, as he showed with the assist for Jesus' goal against Arsenal.

If circumstances dictate then CFA product Samuel Edozie, who started the Community Shield against Leicester last month, is an exciting prospect.

Rating: 9/10

Striker

Ultimately City didn't sign the striker they wanted this season, meaning they are a little light in that department.

Torres looks to be the main option. While the Spain star has impressed, he is still learning the ropes in a new role.

Sterling represents another option at the tip of the attack and played there when he came off the bench to score against Norwich.

Liam Delap will get some minutes here and there as the 18-year-old continues his development, but otherwise Guardiola will have to deploy his false nine system again.

Rating: 5/10
