Man City's Raheem Sterling 'tried to get Liverpool's Joe Gomez in a headlock' during England altercation

Raheem Sterling reportedly tried to get Liverpool's Joe Gomez in a headlock during their clash in the England canteen.

The Manchester City forward got to his feet and attempted to grab Gomez around the neck - knocking food over the table in the process - after the defender walked over to say hello, according to  The Athletic .

Gareth Southgate dropped Sterling from the the Three Lions' Euro 2020 qualifier with Montenegro as a result of the altercation.

The incident took place less than 24 hours after the Reds' 3-1 win over Manchester City at Anfield when an angry Sterling confronted Gomez in the St George's Park canteen after reporting for national duty.

According to reports , Gomez was in the canteen greeting his international team-mates when he spotted Sterling sitting down and walked over to him to say hello.

Sterling is said to have responded with the comment: "So you think you're the big man?", which reportedly sparked laughter from the other players - including Gomez.

The players are believed to have thought the 24-year-old was joking, but things took a sudden turn.

A source told The Athletic: "It was a pretty full-on thing and food went everywhere. Sterling behaved like a bit of a child."
