Man City's Phil Foden relishing Paul Gascoigne comparisons after debuting new blond hair

Phil Foden has welcomed comparisons to Paul Gascoigne - but says his new blond haircut was not intended to imitate the England great.

Foden caused a stir on social media when pictures emerged of him dying his short black hair blond, just as Gascoigne did for Euro 1996 in England.

The Manchester City star, 21, has always had a simple hairstyle, but has chosen the week before the Euro 2020 tournament to change that up by going blond, and naturally such a stark change was the topic of conversation when Foden faced the media for England's latest press conference.

Explaining his change of look, Foden said: "I've had the same haircut for ages now. I thought I'd try something new.

"I woke up this morning with a lot of comparisons to Gazza and Eminem, it was my own thing and people have turned it into something else."

However, the rest of the England squad have reacted positively, Foden said, as he was asked if he was aware of the comparisons to Gascoigne despite not being born for Euro 1996.

He continued: "They've said they liked it, it's a positive thing, which I'm surprised about!

"I remember watching highlights on TV of Gazza. An unbelievable player, the full nation know what he means to the country and what he did.

"It wouldn't be too bad if I tried to bring a bit of Gazza on the pitch! I've dyed it now so it's got to stay around, not going away any time soon."
