Man City's Phil Foden misses out on Golden Boy award

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has missed out on the prestigious Golden Boy award for the second year running.

Foden has enjoyed a fine year at City, winning his second Premier League title as well as the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Community Shield. Despite mainly being restricted to substitute appearances in the league and occasional starts in the cup competitions, Foden has added goals to his game at the Etihad.

The 19-year-old is knocking on the door for more first team starts, and has declined the opportunity to leave the club on loan in a joint decision with manager Pep Guardiola.

However, Foden has been pipped to the Tuttosport Golden Boy award by Atletico Madrid's Joao Felix, who had been linked with a move to City over the summer before he left Benfica.

Former City winger Jadon Sancho was second in the voting, which is conducted by football journalists across Europe. Bayer Leverkusen's Kai Havertz was third.

Erling Haaland of RB Salzburg, also linked with City after his prolific start to the season, came fourth.

Foden came seventh in the final standings, behind Felix, Sancho, Havertz, Haaland, Matthijs de Ligt and Barcelona's 17-year-old winger Ansu Fati.

It is the second year Foden has made the final 20, but failed to win the award after De Ligt came out on top last season.

Previous winners of the accolade include Sergio Aguero (2007), Mario Balotelli (2010), and Raheem Sterling (2014).
