Having spent the past six months convincing their fans they didn't need a recognised striker to retain their Premier League title, Manchester City have gone and signed a striker. It’s great being a City fan, right?
Julian Alvarez has completed his £14.1m move to City but will remain with River Plate until at least July.
City have been heavily linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund hitman Erling Haaland and they may well continue to pursue a move for the Norwegian in the summer.
City is Ours duo Alex Brotherton and Dom Farrell took part in the MEN’s special deadline day Facebook Live to discuss City's new arrival and the pair agreed that there's an element of the Alvarez signing that is even more exciting than if City eventually sign Haaland.
AB : “He's capable of being someone that is going to get the supporters on their feet with his pace, power, technique and the quality of his finishes.
"I think there is a bit of the unknown as well. It's always exciting to sign any good player but when perhaps he's not really been known to City fans for that long it's exciting to have this sort of slightly unknown quality.
“I think that's another thing to be excited about, to see how he develops because, as we've heard from just some of the experts on this show, he’s really highly thought of.
"But he has got areas of his game that he's going to have to develop and Guardiola is the best around for developing young players.
DF : Yeah, I think you're absolutely right about the unknown element there. I mean, people know the ins and outs now from every YouTube video of him in the last few weeks but you feel like you are getting a little bit of a gem.
“If City want to go out and sign Haaland that'd be great. Everyone knows what Haaland can offer and we've probably written about him in the gossip column feature most days since August.
"Haaland would be an incredible signing, no doubt, but there's not going to be a surprise and maybe that's something that Alvarez has over him really that it's going to be exciting.”
