Man City's Ilkay Gundogan reveals message to Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool's Premier League win

Ilkay Gundogan has revealed he sent a message to Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions.

The Manchester City midfielder played under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund before the two went their separate ways.

Whilst they are now rivals, Gundogan still has a great respect for the Liverpool boss and sent him a message to say congratulations after City were beaten to the title.

Speaking to SportBild, the 29-year-old joked that Klopp was brief in his reply.

He said: "Of course, I like him very much and had great years with him at Borussia Dortmund. I congratulated him right after the championship and he later sent me a few smileys back.

"I don’t know exactly what the alcohol level was at the moment, but I assume that he was happy."

City face Real Madrid this week in the Champions League with Zinedine Zidane going head to head with Pep Guardiola.

Man City lead 2-1 on aggregate following the first leg back in February where two late goals shocked the Bernabeu.

Gundogan believes the clash between the two managers is part of what will make the tie such an attractive prospect for fans to watch, especially with Zidane underlining his managerial credentials with a La Liga title this season.

He said: "Guardiola and Zidane are of course two coaches who meet at world-class level.

"The fact that Real has won the league again shows that Zidane knows how to win titles.

"Because that’s the same with Pep, the duel becomes even more attractive."
