Man City's heavily debated goal vs Aston Villa leads to Premier League offside rule change

A rule change has been introduced to the Premier League on the back of a controversial goal scored by Manchester City.

Bernardo Silva’s goal for City against Aston Villa earlier this month caused a stir after Rodri, who was in an offside position, tackled Tyrone Mings to play in the Portuguese forward who then scored.

Villa boss Dean Smith was outraged by the decision not to chalk off the goal, and was subsequently handed a red card by referee Jon Moss for his reaction.

The reaction to the goal led to refereeing governing body the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd to release a statement via the Premier League explaining why the goal was allowed to stand.

Now, according to the Daily Mail, thePGMOL held a summit meeting with football’s rule makers the International Football Association Board and UEFA to discuss the rule.

The report goes on to state that it was agreed that guidance will be given to referees, which would see the goal disallowed if it was to happen in the future.

The new guidance states: “Where a player in an offside position immediately impacts on an opponent who has deliberately played the ball, the match officials should prioritise challenging an opponent for the ball.

"And thus the offside offence of 'interfering with an opponent by impacting on the opponent's ability to play the ball' should be penalised.”

This means that were a player to do what Rodri did against Villa in the future, then they would be penalised by the offside law. PGMOL, however, remain adamant that the right call was made at the time but have welcomed the clarification.
