Man City's £10,000-per-minute profit on Ferran Torres makes Barcelona deal a no-brainer

Ask a Manchester City fan who has been their best signing in terms of value for money, and Vincent Kompany is likely to be a top answer.

Signed for around £6m in 2008, Kompany went on to lead City through a sparkling decade to win every domestic trophy on offer and catapult them into the European elite - as well as making some invaluable and decisive contributions to various title wins along the way.

David Silva could be another contender for best signing when he joined for £30m, as could Sergio Aguero who cost around £38m. Both were huge amounts when the iconic pair joined, but would have been worth nine figures in today's money. Their contributions to City's history cannot be understated.

Now, there's another name on the list of best signings at City as Ferran Torres prepares to join Barcelona in January.

The £46.7m transfer is expected to be completed, with add-ons taking the deal to a potential £55.2m income. In the space of just 18-months, City have more than doubled their £20.7m expenditure on Torres, which was already looked back on as one of the best bargains in recent years in the Premier League.

And a closer look at Torres' impact, especially in relation to his transfer fees, shows just how impressive his short stay in Manchester has been, and why it shows City's transfer operation is as sharp as it's ever been.

After paying just £20.7m for Torres, City will get an initial £26m profit from Barcelona's up-front fee for the Spanish international. In the space of just 43 appearances, Torres has earned City a remarkable £600,000 profit per outing, which could rise to £800,000 per appearance if all of the add-ons are achieved.

When drilled down, that figure shows City made £10,000 in profit for every minute Torres played for them. It will be £13,000 per minute if Barcelona have to pay the maximum transfer fee.

Torres started 31 of his 43 outings, scoring in 15 of those games. His 16 goals and five assists is a solid return from a young forward in a new league getting used to Pep Guardiola's style, and he was showing signs this season of playing a larger role with a year under his belt at the Etihad.

In fact, of all current players at the club, Torres averaged the best minutes-per-goal record since his arrival with a goal every 165 minutes. Each goal he scored earned City £1.6m of profit on their initial outlay. Add his assists, and Torres contributed to a goal every 125 minutes.

It's no wonder there is an argument that only receiving £55m for Torres is a bad deal for City.

However, Torres was left on the bench 26 times in his 18 months at City, and featured in just 32 per cent of their Premier League matches in that time - including his recent injury that has kept him out since October.

And after remaining on the bench for all of City's knockout games in the Champions League last season, he was rarely used as a late substitute as Guardiola appeared to favour giving Torres longer run-outs. Even then, he only scored once when coming off the bench, so the fact that only three of his appearances lasted under 15 minutes might have helped him get more out of each game, but also contributed to his inconsistent use among City's talented front players.

However, for a player who wasn't a regular, it's a remarkable return to make an initial 125 per cent profit after just 31 starts. Torres would be justified in thinking his playing time would continue to be limited, so it's understandable for him to seek a transfer away.

He will leave City thinking what could have been, but he will know he also leaves a legacy as one of their best pieces of transfer business in years.

He may not have had the legendary impact of Kompany, Aguero or Silva, but when the debate of best value signing is next reignited, Torres has to be firmly in the mix and City will be watching his progress with interest and pride.
