Man City release Phil Foden statement after 'totally inappropriate' decision

Phil Foden has been criticised by Manchester City after he was sent home from the England camp.

The 20-year-old was lauded at the weekend after making his senior international debut but has been condemned for a "totally inappropriate" decision that has seen him unable to travel with Gareth Southgate's squad to Denmark for their game on Tuesday.

Despite the clear guidance around Covid-19, Foden and Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood were found to be in breach of the rules after Icelandic media published stills and a short video of girls in a hotel room with from Sunday. Southgate was left with no option but to exclude the pair from the squad, and given they broke the team bubble there is the possibility that they may have to self-isolate on their return to England.

While full details of the incident are not yet known, City decided that they were informed enough to be able to criticise the player for 'falling well below the standards they expect'.

"Manchester City FC are aware of the story which has emerged today from the England national team camp in relation to the behaviour of Phil Foden," it read. "We have also seen the comments from England manager Gareth Southgate.

"It is clear that Phil’s actions were totally inappropriate.

"His behaviour not only directly contravenes strict guidelines related to Covid-19, but also falls well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player and England international. The club supports the FA regarding this incident, and officials from the Club are now in touch in relation to Phil’s enforced early return to the UK.

"We have no further comment to make on this matter."
