Man City receive huge injury boost as they look to chase down Liverpool

Man City have received a huge injury boost as they look to chase down league leaders Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola's side have been short of defensive options this season with both Aymeric Laporte and John Stones suffering injuries.

Laporte has been out since August and midfielder Fernandinho has had to deputise at centre-back on numerous occasions.

But City have finally had some positive news with the Frenchman returning to the City starting XI for tonight's fixture at Sheffield United.

Laporte is arguably Guardiola's best defender and his return will strengthen City's chances of closing the gap on Liverpool and progressing in the Champions League.

However, the Spaniard insisted that fans should not expect too much from the defender, given the length of time he has spent away from the football pitch.

"We cannot expect Aymeric is going to solve all of the problems,” he said after City's draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

"He is getting better and the doctor is going to evaluate him and I am going to talk to him about when it will be possible to come back. But after four or five months he will need time, so he will not be ready immediately to do it."

But it seems the 25-year-old is ready to get back into action sooner than his manager expected.

High-flying Sheffield United won't be the easiest of returns but having his name on the teamsheet is a welcome sight for City fans.
