Man City pull out of Super League but cannot comment due to 'legal reasons'

Manchester City are refusing to comment on reports that they have pulled out of the European Super League.

But information received by MEN Sport indicates that the Blues HAVE pulled the plug on their involvement shortly after it emerged that Chelsea had been the first to crack after 48 hours if unrelenting pressure from the rest of football, including their own fans, players and ex-players

A City spokesperson would only say that “due to legal reasons, we cannot comment”.

But it is understood that Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are all following suit, killing the idea which was only announced on Sunday night.

City boss Pep Guardiola virtually made City’s membership unworkable by declaring his opposition to any competition in which “the relation between effort and success, between effort and reward, doesn't exist”.

With star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne also urging the situation to be resolved in a social media post, City - who were believed to be the last to sign up to the idea - made the decision to quit the nascent competition.

The problem now is that the clubs have all signed contracts, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez warning yesterday that those documents were legally binding, and that appears to be the reason City are staying silent.
