Man City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne jokes about Liverpool Premier League title chance

Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne has joked about Liverpool’s mammoth Premier League lead.

The Reds are a record 25 points clear of nearest rivals City and need just two more wins from their final nine games to clinch a first title since 1990.

Top-flight football is currently suspended until April 30 due to the coronavirus outbreak, although it is widely expected that date will be extended significantly.

De Bruyne took part in an Instagram live with fellow Belgium internationals Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel and Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku on Tuesday night.

During the conversation, Witsel said Dortmund were in a good position to win the title before Bundesliga football was also suspended, with the German side four points off leaders Bayern Munich having won seven of their eight league games this year.

“Since January, we play really well,” he said. “We were in a good position to fight for the titles then we stopped.”

That prompted De Bruyne to joke: “Yeah, we (City) were fighting for the title too, we were almost there!

“It’s hard (to win the title every year). But you try."

Of the current suspensions, he added: “It’s crazy because we don’t know what’s going to happen.

"People ask us what is going to happen, but we don’t even know.”

City have won the title for the last two years and in 2018/19 beat Liverpool to top spot by a single point, with the Reds claiming the highest points total – 97 – in English top-flight history not to win the championship.
