Man City player ratings vs Shakhtar Donetsk: Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus poor

Ederson

His horrendous air-shot in the first half was rescued by Fernandinho, but he was steady after that. 5

Joao Cancelo

Attacks kept breaking down after reaching him in the first half - crossing and passing need to be better. 5

Fernandinho

Heroic defensive blocks are now as much a part of his game as immense focus-changing passes. 8

Nicolas Otamendi

Thumping header almost brought him a goal, and he defended well enough, too. Solid tackling, strong throughout. 7

Angelino

Kept losing the flying Tete in the first half - and the goal  was down his side as well. Happier on the front foot. 5

Rodri

Keeps the ball circulating but does not produce the killer passes City are used to from Fernandinho in that role. 6

Kevin De Bruyne

Single-handedly tried to drag City up to their usual level, and came up with the pass for Gundogan's goal. 8

Ilkay Gundogan

Better in the holding role after Rodri's departure - on the left he barely got Sterling involved at all. 6

Bernardo Silva

Working hard with De Bruyne but he is still trying to recapture the magic of last season. 6

Gabriel Jesus

Did well to create Gundogan's goal but his lack of opportunities is a concern, especially against ordinary opponents. 5

Raheem Sterling

Two anonymous games in quick succession is unusual - and City have to hope the sparkle has not gone a little flat at a vital time. 5

Subs

David Silva

(for De Bruyne 58) Couldn't change it. 6

Phil Foden

(for Rodri 76) No heroics. 6

Not used: Carson, Walker, Stones, Mendy, Mahrez
