Man City player Kevin De Bruyne gets injury boost ahead of Euro 2020

Kevin De Bruyne has responded well to his surgery over the weekend and remains on course to play in Euro 2020 for Belgium.

The Manchester City playmaker suffered an acute nose bone fracture and left orbital fracture after a collision with Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger in the Champions League final.

That put De Bruyne's participation in Euro 2020 in doubt, and he has played no part in Belgium's pre-tournament friendlies. Instead, he underwent a short procedure at the weekend to improve his chances of playing in the tournament.

The operation was conducted with agreement from City, and De Bruyne then met up with his Belgium teammates on Monday as planned, sporting two black eyes but looking in good spirits.

"He has joined the group and that’s fantastic news,’ Martinez said on Tuesday.

"He looks ready, he looks fresh and just for him walking into the dining room was a real highlight of the day.

"He watched the Croatia game and he’s already in the mood of the team and is looking forward to slowly taking his own pace with the medical team. But it makes a big difference when he’s with the players and is part of the group."

Going further into the procedure to correct his facial injuries, which is intended to ensure he doesn't need to wear a mask, Martinez confirmed the early signs are positive.

He added: "Very well, the medical intervention went extremely well. It’s still a very fresh one, so will take a few days but the initial reaction has been really positive and he seems ready. He’s looking more forwards than backwards."
